Flarestack FAQ

Q. What is a "zero ground disturbance" flarestack?

A. A trailer-mounted portable flarestack that does not require stakes, spikes or ground-screws to be set into the soil.  Like the name implies, the trailer and outriggers combine to make a stable platform that supports the flarestack even in windy conditions.

Q. How much wind can the portable flare stack handle?
A. The 4" x 40' portable flarestack is engineered to withstand windspeeds up to 90 MPH.  This is the maximum windspeed for standing, not operating. We strongly recommend the flare stack be not be operated in winds above 60 MPH.

Q. Does Mountain Equipment sell flare stacks?
A. Yes, we sell trailer mounted self-erecting zero ground disturbance flarestacks in various sizes.  Call 800-530-4197 ext. 102 for pricing and availability.

Q. How long does it take to erect a portable flare stack?
A. With a little practice, a typical portable flarestack can be fully erected in 15-20 minutes. Once the outriggers have been set, and the stack has been unfolded, an electrically powered hydraulic ram lifts (or lowers) the stack.

Q. How is the flare ignited?
A. The flarestack uses an always-on electric igniter that is powered continuously by a solar-powered charger with battery.  Being continuously fired ensures the flare remains lit even in windy or gusty conditions. The battery provides sufficient charge to keep the igniter firing all night long.
